children and media violence

television violence boys showed increased physical aggression and the girls did things through indirect aggression such as destroying someone’s things, and spreading rumors about someone else.

Media Violence and Children violence does cause children to become aggressive both in the shot and long term.  Newer sources such as television and the internet have made media influences more wide spread and its accessibility easer to obtain.  Kids and teens 8-18 years of age spend nearly 4 hours a day in front of the television.  Children who watch 1 to 3 hours of television each day were 60% more likely to be involved in assaults and fights.  The average American child witnessing 200,000 violent acts and 16,000 murders on television by age 18.  Half of parents with children between the ages of 4-6 report that their children have initiated aggressive behaviors from television.  Children become desensitized to the violence they see.  A single exposure to violent media led to an immediate drop in concern or sympathy about aggressive acts perpetuated by others.  Children are not safe from the parental blocking technologies are insufficient due to the flawed television rating system.  Broadcasting has loosened their ratings in order to gain ratings.   Media ratings include increasingly more violent and sexual imagery, drug use, and harsh language.  1820 movies released in the time from 1993-2005 had become increasing violent in movies all rated PG and PG 13.  Video games are also becoming more violent than ever before. All this violence is what the corporate giants want us to buy.  The many different forms of media tell men that women need a big strong man to protect and rescue her.  In the movies and television we have seen the American hero going after the villain.

                                                         Thesis
The focus of this paper is to show how the media has harmful effects on children and adolescents.  The media has masmarketed to our children and adolesents on a daily basis and this has effected children's phicial health and mental health. Our children are targeted by the media from birth.  The music and music vidios have encoraged early promiscuity through the sexually explicit content being shown and heard in the meda today.  An finally the violence in the main stream media has effected both young girls and boys watching and listening to the media today in a negative way  We need to change this if we want our children to view our young women men with respect in the future.

  1. Saturday morning cartoons are some of the most violent shows on television. How many times are children seeing violence against characters with no consequences since the character is always fine in the end? However, this violence is often times not realistic. Video games, on the other hand, have quite realistic violence.
